The Team

Bellese Technologies is looking for help solving big problems in healthcare. We need engineers who love to develop performant, elegant, and useful solutions for use by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and their providers and beneficiaries. 

This team is charged with supporting CMS in their effort to modernize the Medicare Payment System. We employ a research-driven, user-centered, agile, and adaptive product development approach to deliver modern and standards-based solutions. This effort empowers CMS to provide responsive, correct, and accessible systems and processes for processing payments. The team works very closely with our CMS customer teams, as well as other teams in the modernization effort. 

The Role

As a Senior Engineer - Database, you have demonstrated experience building and maintaining plans, documentation, and backlogs for one or more technical domains. You’re capable of owning technical design for projects of medium complexity, and understand the tradeoffs in creating good systems. You hold a depth of knowledge in systems that enable you to debug them effectively without issues. You're aware of industry best practices and trends and have acquired at least one major skill outside of Database Engineering such as application development, documentation, integration testing, performance optimization.

You're responsible for complex tasks and complete them despite roadblocks, grabbing others for help or insight as necessary. You require very little oversight beyond high-level direction; you can take a complex user story, break it down into sub-tasks, and complete their sub-tasks with relative ease. You show initiative beyond knocking tasks off a list; you're able to identify and suggest areas of future work for yourself or your team. You contribute to the common data standards for your team. You understand the business that their code and data supports and use this knowledge to influence your task prioritization. In general, you can identify risks in data, features, and design, and communicate these to the appropriate parties.

You’re known outside of your core team as a technology leader. You mentor others via frequent code reviews and pairing, as well as frequently presenting at team meetings. You work effectively with non-tech members of the project and customer teams. You're able to identify problems with requirements and help your team course-correct around these issues.

The Technology

Here is some of the tech we use on our team, and the experience we’re looking for. Direct knowledge is great, but knowledge with alternative products is perfectly OK! The concepts are likely the same, and new tech can be learned.

- AWS - DynamoDB, Aurora (PostgreSQL)
- Data store design and management - creating schemas, backups/restores, testing
- Data Tooling - Flyway (or other data migration tools)
- Application Integration - Java-based APIs
- Observability and Monitoring - New Relic, Cloudwatch, Splunk, PagerDuty
- Agile and Collaboration - Jira, Confluence, Slack, Zoom, Google Workspace
- Development tools - git, Linux, command line tools

We are looking for someone with extensive experience in NoSQL and Relational data stores, related performance, and their design and architecture. Having the ability to evaluate and quickly learn existing data stores for continued support, while determining how future uses may evolve the platform will be key.


  • Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline or equivalent experience
  • 6 or more years of professional experience
